The Legal Cup – the UK’s number one legal industry regatta

The Legal Cup

The 32nd staging of our popular Legal Cup regatta and is set to take place on Saturday 20 – Sunday 21 May 2023.

Known as the main social, sporting and networking event for the legal industry, The Legal Cup has been established as one of the largest regattas in the country and attracts members of the sector from across the country for a weekend of team building, networking and down and out fun!

But what is it? Head of Marketing, Aimee Barnes, tells us all about this amazing event here:

What is the Legal Cup?

The Legal Cup is an annual sailing regatta for the legal sector that has been running for over 30 years.  Based on the south coast, near Southampton, it is the main social and sporting event for the industry and involves great opportunities to network with peers, team build, compete in a new way with industry competitors and raise money for the event’s chosen not-for-profit partner, Plan B Alternative Provisions.

Who can take part?

Anyone who works in, works for or crosses over with the legal industry is welcome to join us at the Legal Cup.  So whether you are a lawyer, barrister, QC, paralegal, support staff or a supplier to the sector, get your team together and come and take part.

Previous attendees include: Allen & Overy, Ashurst, Bird & Bird, Dechert, Freshfields, Herbert Smith Freehills, and Linklaters.

Do I need any previous sailing experience?

No, we have a great team of professional skippers and first mates (lots of who are also qualified instructors) that we can pair you with on our fantastic fleet of 37-40ft yachts, so you do not need any sailing experience to take part.  We have teams that have never set foot on a boat before, competing on a level playing field with teams that sail year upon year, so a lack of experience shouldn’t be a reason to miss out!

How long does it last for?

Two days over a weekend in Spring 2023. You can join the event on Friday for an optional training day or head down first thing on the Saturday morning and the event finishes mid-afternoon on Sunday. Friday night is spent at our base in Port Hamble Marina before racing starts on Saturday morning, followed by our hotly anticipated fundraising gala dinner and Sunday’s racing finishes the event back in Hamble.

We can provide free parking in Hamble for the duration of the event and we can assist in sorting all accommodation, transport and catering needs to reduce your work load if needed.

Where is it held?

The event starts and finishes in Hamble (near Southampton), the racing takes place in the Solent (the home of UK sailing) and the overnight is based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.
